About Wardha — A Brief History

Wardha is a small town in central Vidarbha, sitting on the river of the same name where the cotton plains of central Maharashtra begin. The settlement grew along the Nagpur–Wardha–Itarsi rail line in the late nineteenth century, but the district that surrounds it, with its older market towns of Hinganghat, Pulgaon and Arvi, has been part of the cotton-and-jowar belt since the time of the Bhonsles of Nagpur.

Most people across India know Wardha because of Mahatma Gandhi. From 1936 onwards, Gandhi made his home at Sevagram (literally the Service Village), an ashram on the outskirts of the town that he ran with his close associates. The Sevagram Ashram, the simple Bapu Kuti where he lived, the Maganwadi where the Magan Sangrahalaya museum tells the story of his economic ideas, and the Vinoba Bhave Pavnar Ashram (just outside the town) are all part of a strong Gandhian heritage circuit. Many of the city's institutions, including the Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, are named after Gandhiji.

The local economy depends on cotton, soybean, oranges and a few small engineering units, and the central ammunition depot at Pulgaon is one of the largest of its kind in Asia. The Mumbai–Howrah trunk railway and NH-44 keep the district well connected.
