About Warangal — A Brief History

Warangal sits on the rocky Deccan plateau in northern Telangana, and is one of the most historically important cities in southern India. The town was the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty that ruled most of modern Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries, and many of the buildings of that period are still standing. The famous Thousand Pillar Temple at Hanamkonda, with its star-shaped granite plan and its delicately carved nandi, is a Kakatiya gem, and the Warangal Fort with its four ornamental gateways (the Kakatiya Kala Toranam) marks the site of the old capital.

The Ramappa Temple at Palampet, about seventy kilometres from the city, is the most striking Kakatiya monument of all and was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2021. Built in 1213 by a sculptor called Ramappa (after whom it is named unusual for an Indian temple), it has lightweight bricks that float on water and intricate stone sculptures that influenced southern Indian architecture for centuries afterwards. The temple is a Shiva shrine and is also a working temple where pujas continue every day.

Warangal is also famous for its handlooms the Warangal carpets, the Pochampally ikat sarees and the Gadwal cotton sarees from this wider region all have GI tags. The town is home to the National Institute of Technology Warangal, the Kakatiya University, and a growing food-processing belt.
