About Varanasi — A Brief History

Varanasi also called Kashi or Banaras sits on the western bank of the Ganga in eastern UP, and is widely believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. The town's name comes from the two small streams, the Varuna and the Assi, that meet the Ganga at the city's northern and southern ends. The Buddha is said to have given his first sermon at Sarnath, just outside Varanasi, in around 528 BCE, and the famous Mahabodhi Temple at Sarnath still marks that spot.

Varanasi is one of the seven Mokshapuris and the seat of the Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve sacred Shiva shrines. The crowded ghats along the Ganga Dashashwamedh, Manikarnika, Assi, Tulsi and over eighty others are at the heart of the city's religious life, with the daily Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh drawing thousands of visitors every evening. Manikarnika ghat is one of the holiest cremation grounds for Hindus, where bodies have been cremated continuously for thousands of years.

Beyond pilgrimage, the city is famous for Banarasi silk sarees (with their GI tag), the Banaras Hindu University founded by Madan Mohan Malviya in 1916, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple, and a long line of saint-poets including Kabir, Tulsidas and Ravidas, all of whom lived and worked here.
