About Ujjain — A Brief History

Ujjain is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India, sitting on the eastern bank of the Kshipra river in Madhya Pradesh. In ancient texts it appears as Avantika, the capital of the Avanti kingdom mentioned in the Mahabharata, and centuries later it became the seat of the Mauryan governor Ashoka before he rose to be emperor. The city is most closely linked with the legendary King Vikramaditya, whose court is said to have included the Navaratnas, nine luminaries of poetry, science and astronomy. The Vikram Samvat calendar, still used across much of north India, takes its name from him.

For Hindus, Ujjain is one of the seven Mokshapuris and a host city of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which draws millions of pilgrims to the Kshipra ghats every twelve years. The Mahakaleshwar temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, anchors the city's spiritual life, and the daily Bhasma Aarti at the shrine remains a ritual unique to Ujjain. Around it stand the Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi and Chintaman Ganesh temples, each with its own following.
