About Srinagar — A Brief History

Srinagar sits in the heart of the Kashmir valley, on the banks of the Jhelum river and the famous Dal Lake. The settlement is one of the oldest in the valley, founded according to tradition by Emperor Pravarasena II in the sixth century CE and later expanded by various Hindu, Buddhist, Sultanate, Mughal, Sikh and Dogra rulers. The Mughals were particularly fond of Srinagar Akbar built the Hari Parbat fort, Jahangir laid out the Shalimar Bagh in 1619 for his wife Nur Jahan, Shah Jahan added the Chashme Shahi spring garden, and the Nishat Bagh gardens that step down towards the Dal Lake are still among the most beautiful Mughal gardens in India.

The Dal Lake is the heart of Srinagar's tourism. The famous wooden houseboats, built first by British officers who weren't allowed to buy land here, the colourful shikaras that paddle visitors across the lake, and the floating vegetable market at dawn give Srinagar a feel found nowhere else in India. The Hazratbal Mosque on the western shore, said to hold a hair of the Prophet Mohammad, and the Shankaracharya Temple on a high hill above the city, are the most important religious sites.

Srinagar is also famous across the world for Kashmiri handicrafts the pashmina shawls, the Kashmiri carpets, the papier-mache, the silver filigree and the saffron from Pampore (just outside the city).
