About South West Delhi — A Brief History

South West Delhi covers a wide stretch of the south-western corner of the National Capital Territory, from the Indira Gandhi International Airport at Palam through the planned new towns of Dwarka and Najafgarh out to the Haryana border. The district was created when Delhi reorganised its civic boundaries in the 1990s and brought together the older Najafgarh, Palam and Dwarka belts under a single administrative roof. The Najafgarh village, in the western part of the district, dates back to the eighteenth century when the Mughal-era amir Mirza Najaf Khan built a fort here.

The district is dominated today by the airport. Indira Gandhi International, the busiest airport in India, sits in this district and has driven a long boom in surrounding hotels, cargo terminals, MRO facilities and aviation training schools. Aerocity, the airport-side hotel district just north of the runways, hosts most of the major international hotel chains. The Indira Gandhi National Open University headquarters, the Janakpuri District Centre, the Dwarka sub-city (one of Asia's largest planned residential extensions) and the diplomatic enclaves of Vasant Kunj all fall within South West Delhi.

The local economy mixes aviation services, IT-and-BPO clusters around Dwarka, government offices and dense residential estates. The new Dwarka Expressway, the Delhi-Mumbai expressway exit and three Delhi Metro lines all run through the district.
