About South Goa — A Brief History

South Goa is the quieter of Goa's two districts, covering the southern coast and the inland country around the Zuari river. The headquarters at Margao is Goa's commercial centre and one of the busiest market towns on the coast its market lanes, Portuguese-era homes and the seventeenth-century Holy Spirit Church give the town a distinctly Goan character. The settlement was an important Brahmin-temple centre before the Portuguese arrived in 1510, and many of the old families of the town date their continuous presence to the medieval period.

The district has many of Goa's most relaxed beaches Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim, Mobor, Palolem and Agonda that have a longer sandy stretch and a quieter feel than the busier beaches of North Goa. Cabo de Rama, with its Portuguese fort overlooking the sea, is one of the most photographed cliffs on the coast.

The local economy includes tourism, fisheries, the Vasco da Gama port (the largest cargo port in Goa), and the Mormugao Naval Base. Vasco da Gama is a major station on the Konkan Railway.
