About South Dinajpur — A Brief History

South Dinajpur sits in northern West Bengal, in the rolling country between the Atreyee and Punarbhaba rivers, just below the Terai foothills of the Himalayas. The district was created in 1992 when the older West Dinajpur district was split into two; the headquarters today is at Balurghat, an old market town on the Atreyee river. The town's name comes from a fifteenth-century saint called Bali, and the Atreyee Lake at the centre of Balurghat is one of the prettiest small lakes in northern Bengal.

The district has a long and unusual history. It was an important centre of the Mauryan and Gupta empires, and was later the heart of the medieval Pala kingdom that ruled most of eastern India between the eighth and twelfth centuries. The Bangarh archaeological site, just outside Balurghat, has produced terracotta plaques and pottery from the Mauryan and Gupta periods. The district was on the front line of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War Balurghat hosted thousands of refugees fleeing the war, and the Mukti Bahini training camps were based here.

The local economy depends on rice (South Dinajpur is one of the biggest rice-producing districts in West Bengal, with extensive paddy fields and small rice mills along the railway), wheat, tobacco and a small jute belt. The town is connected to Malda and Kolkata by rail and road.
