About South Delhi — A Brief History

South Delhi covers the rolling country south of Lutyens' New Delhi, where the Aravalli ridge runs through the city and dips into the planned colonies of the post-independence era. The district is one of the wealthiest in India, with neighbourhoods like Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Greater Kailash, Defence Colony and Saket built around the planned Outer Ring Road from the 1960s onwards. The Qutub Minar, built between 1192 and 1220 to mark the start of Sultanate rule in India, is the most famous monument in the district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around it lie the Iron Pillar of Mehrauli, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, the Ala'i Darwaza and the Tomb of Iltutmish. The Mehrauli Archaeological Park stretches across the southern slope and holds dozens of smaller tombs, mosques and stepwells. The Hauz Khas complex, with its fourteenth-century madrasa, tomb and tank, is at the heart of one of South Delhi's busiest urban villages.

Today South Delhi is famous for its design boutiques in Hauz Khas Village, the Saket District Centre malls, the IIT Delhi campus at Hauz Khas, and the Lotus Temple of the Bahá'í Faith built in 1986.
