About Solan — A Brief History

Solan sits in the lower Shivalik hills of southern Himachal Pradesh, on the road between Chandigarh and Shimla. The town's name is said to come from the goddess Shoolini Mata, whose old temple still stands at the centre of the city and whose annual Shoolini Mela in June draws thousands of visitors. The settlement was the capital of the small Baghal princely state until 1948, and the old Mahal of the Baghal Rajas now houses the district administrative offices. The British turned Solan into a small cantonment in the late nineteenth century, and the cantonment area still feels distinct from the bazaar town.

Solan is widely known across India by two unusual nicknames. The first is the Mushroom City of India the directorate of mushroom research, set up here in 1983, has made Solan the centre of India's mushroom-growing industry, and a large part of the district's farms grow button and oyster mushrooms for buyers across north India. The second nickname is the City of Red Gold, after the long red tomato fields that surround the town and supply tomatoes to markets across north India.

Beyond agriculture, the district has the Mohan Meakin distillery, Asia's biggest brewery at the Mohan Nagar plant, and a growing IT-and-pharma belt at Baddi, Barotiwala and Nalagarh just down the hill. The famous Kasauli hill station is also part of Solan district.
