About Sirsa — A Brief History

Sirsa is the largest town of western Haryana, sitting on the dry plain where the state runs into Punjab and Rajasthan. The town is mentioned in the Mahabharata as Saraswati Nagar, after the lost Saraswati river that is said to have flowed through this area, and as Sairishaka in old Buddhist texts. Excavations at Banawali, in the same district, have uncovered an early Harappan settlement going back over 4,500 years, with evidence of clay tools, terracotta figurines and the typical Indus seals.

Sirsa grew under the Tomar Rajputs, the Tughluqs, the Mughals and finally the British, who turned it into the headquarters of the Sirsa district in 1819. The town centre still has many Mughal-era and Sikh-era monuments, including the Bhadra Kali temple, the Dera Baba Tara Sahib gurudwara and the Tomb of Sufi saint Sarsai Nath, after whom the city is sometimes said to be named. In modern times, Sirsa has become widely known across north India because of the Dera Sacha Sauda spiritual centre, with its very large following.

The local economy depends on cotton (Sirsa is one of the largest cotton mandis in Haryana), kinnow oranges, wheat and a strong cooperative dairy. The Bathinda–Hisar railway, the Sirsa–Delhi NH-9 and the Bhakra canal system keep the district connected.
