About Satara — A Brief History

Satara is one of the heartland Maratha towns of southern Maharashtra, sitting at the foot of the Sahyadri ranges where the Krishna river begins to gather strength. The town's name comes from the seven (saat) hills (taras) that ring it, and Shahuji Maharaj, the grandson of Shivaji, made Satara the capital of the Maratha empire after his release from Mughal captivity in 1707. For most of the eighteenth century the formal seat of Maratha power was here, even as the Peshwas ran the empire from Pune.

Satara has many old palaces and forts. The Ajinkyatara fort right above the town is a steep climb but rewards visitors with views to the western ghats. Sajjangadh, where Sant Ramdas Swami spent his final years and wrote much of the Dasbodh, is just outside Satara and remains a busy spiritual centre. The Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani hill stations, the source of the Krishna river at Mahabaleshwar's Old Mahabaleshwar temple, and the Pratapgad fort where Shivaji killed Afzal Khan in 1659, are all within an easy day's drive.

The local economy runs on sugarcane, dairy, strawberries, tourism and the Kirloskar engineering complex at Karad. Cooperative sugar factories at Karad, Kashibavada and Walwa drive the rural belt. The Mumbai–Bangalore highway and the Mumbai–Pune–Bangalore railway pass through.
