About Sangrur — A Brief History

Sangrur sits in the heart of the Malwa region of southern Punjab, in the dry plain that runs towards Haryana. The town was founded in the seventeenth century by Sangu Singh of the Sandhu Jat family, and was the capital of the small Jind princely state's southern parganah. The older quarter still has the Banasar Bagh, the Diwan Khana of the Jind royal family, and the small but striking Sangrur Fort.

The most interesting town in the district is, however, Malerkotla, just thirty kilometres east of Sangrur. Malerkotla was founded in 1454 by Sheikh Sadr-ud-din-i-Jahan, an Afghan Sufi saint, and was the only Muslim-ruled princely state in pre-1947 Punjab. The town is best known across India for the brave protest of the Nawab of Malerkotla, Sher Mohammad Khan, who in 1705 publicly raised a 'haa da naara' (cry against the wrong) at the Sirhind court when Wazir Khan ordered the bricking up of Guru Gobind Singh's two younger sons aged 7 and 9. This brave act earned Malerkotla a permanent blessing from Guru Gobind Singh, and the town remains a symbol of Hindu-Sikh-Muslim brotherhood in Punjab.

Beyond heritage, the local economy depends on basmati rice, wheat, dairy and a growing yarn-and-textile cluster around Sangrur. The Bhakra canal runs through, and the Delhi-Bhatinda railway and NH-7 keep the district connected.
