About Sangli — A Brief History

Sangli is the largest town of southern Maharashtra, set on the banks of the Krishna river just where the Warana joins it. The town began as a Patwardhan princely state in the eighteenth century, ruled by a Maratha sardar family that the Peshwas had granted the area to. The Patwardhans built the small Sangli palace, the Ganapati temple by the river and the early co-operative sugar factories in their territory, and after independence the state merged into Maharashtra. The annual immersion procession of the Patwardhan family Ganpati on Anant Chaturdashi remains one of the largest in western Maharashtra.

Sangli has long been famous for two very different things. First, it is the largest turmeric (haldi) market in Asia, with the Sangli Yellow variety going to spice traders across India and the Gulf, and the haldi auctions during the dry season filling the mandi yards with bright yellow heaps. Second, the town has been one of the cradles of Marathi theatre. The first Marathi natak (play) was performed at Sangli in the 1840s, and the town has produced playwrights, singers and stage actors who have shaped Maharashtra's cultural life.

The local economy mixes sugar, turmeric, grapes, raisins and a growing wine cluster around Tasgaon. Sangli also has many small foundries and irrigation-pump units, and the Krishna riverfront is being slowly redeveloped.
