About Rupnagar — A Brief History

Rupnagar also called Ropar sits at the eastern edge of Punjab, on the right bank of the Sutlej river just where it leaves the Shivalik foothills. The town's older name is Ropar, and the surrounding plain has been an important crossing point on the Sutlej since the Harappan period. Excavations at Ropar in the 1950s uncovered one of the easternmost Indus Valley settlements, with seals, painted pottery and burials from around 2500 BCE the Ropar archaeological site is now a notified ASI monument.

The town later passed through Mauryan, Mughal and Sikh hands, and grew under the Sikh Misls in the eighteenth century. The famous Ropar Gurudwara of Bhatta Sahib, where Guru Gobind Singh stopped on his way to Anandpur Sahib, draws steady pilgrim flows. Just thirty kilometres up the Sutlej from Rupnagar is the giant Bhakra Nangal dam, India's tallest gravity dam, built in 1963 Jawaharlal Nehru famously called it 'the new temple of resurgent India' and one of the most-visited engineering tourism stops in the country.

Modern Rupnagar is home to the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, set up in 2008 as one of India's newer IITs, the Bhakra Beas Management Board headquarters at Nangal, and a busy education-and-research belt. The local economy mixes agriculture (basmati rice, wheat), sand mining from the Sutlej, and the spillover of the larger Chandigarh-Mohali metropolitan area.
