About Rewa — A Brief History

Rewa lies in the Baghelkhand region of north-eastern Madhya Pradesh, on the Bichhia river just south of where the Vindhyan escarpment falls away towards the Gangetic plain. The town was the seat of the Baghela kings, who ruled this area for almost six hundred years from the late thirteenth century onwards, and the moated Rewa Fort with its palaces, ghats and arsenal still stands at the heart of the city. The Govindgarh Palace, twelve kilometres outside, was the summer retreat where successive maharajas hunted the Vindhyan jungles.

The district is most famously associated with the white tiger of Rewa. The first specimen, named Mohan, was caught in the Sidhi forests in 1951 by Maharaja Martand Singh, and a breeding programme based at the Govindgarh palace put Rewa on the map of every wildlife enthusiast. The new white tiger safari at Mukundpur continues that legacy, while the Keoti and Chachai falls cut deep gorges just outside the city and remain an important monsoon-season draw for visitors.
