About Ratnagiri — A Brief History

Ratnagiri sits on the southern Konkan coast, with the Sahyadri ranges rising sharply just inland from a narrow strip of beaches, mango orchards and small fishing harbours. The town's name means jewel hills, after the gem-like cliffs that ring its bay, and it has been a fishing and trading port since the time of the Shilaharas of the southern Konkan in the eleventh century. The Bhagwati fort and the Thiba palace, where the last king of Burma was kept by the British in exile from 1885 till his death in 1916, mark the town's older centre.

Ratnagiri is most famously known across India as the home of the Alphonso (Hapus) mango, the variety that ripens in late April and early May along the coast and goes out by the truckload to Mumbai's Crawford Market and from there to the world. The orchards around Devgad, Pawas and Ratnagiri have a Geographical Indication protection. The town is also the birthplace of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856), one of the strongest voices of the early freedom movement, and the bungalow where he was born is now a memorial.

The local economy depends on mangoes, cashew, fishing, the JSW Energy plant at Jaigad, and a growing tourism circuit on the Ganpatipule beach and along the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg coast. The Konkan Railway and NH-66 keep the town connected to Mumbai and Goa.
