About Ratlam — A Brief History

Ratlam is set on the western edge of the Malwa plateau, an old princely town that the Rathore prince Ratan Singh founded in the seventeenth century with a grant from the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The town's planned chowks, the Bilpank Mahadev temple just outside it and the Kalika Mata shrine on the hilltop testify to that early Rathore patronage, and the descendants of the original ruling line still live in the old Hawa Mahal.
