About Ramanagar — A Brief History

Ramanagar sits on the road between Bangalore and Mysore in southern Karnataka, in the rocky country where giant granite outcrops rise out of the surrounding farmland. The town was carved out of the larger Bangalore Rural district in 2007 to give the silk-and-rocks belt its own administrative seat. Older settlements like Channapatna and Kanakapura are also part of the district and have their own distinct trades.

Ramanagar is widely known across India as the silk city of Karnataka. The town has the largest cocoon market in Asia, where silk farmers from across southern Karnataka bring their cocoons every morning for auction, and the surrounding villages produce a large share of the state's mulberry silk. Channapatna, twenty kilometres away, is famous for its lacquered wooden toys, a craft that has earned a Geographical Indication tag and goes back to the time of Tipu Sultan, who is said to have invited Persian craftsmen to teach the local artisans the lac-turning technique.

The district's other claim to fame is the rocky landscape itself. The Sholay Hills around Ramanagar the giant granite outcrops where the famous 1975 Hindi movie Sholay was filmed draw rock-climbers, photographers and film tourists. The Ramadevara Betta and Savandurga hills are popular trekking spots, and the long-billed vulture sanctuary at Ramadevara Betta is one of the few protected vulture habitats in southern India.
