About Rajnandgaon — A Brief History

Rajnandgaon sits in western Chattisgarh, on the road between Durg and the Maharashtra border. The town's name is a contraction of Raj-Nandi-gram (the royal Nandi village), and the settlement grew under the Bhonsle Marathas of Nagpur in the eighteenth century when they granted the area as a jagir to a branch of the Vaishnava saint family. The town later became the capital of the Rajnandgaon princely state, one of the smaller but more progressive Chattisgarh durbars under the British. The old Rajwada palace, the Madhava Temple and the Hawa Mahal still mark the older centre.

The district is widely known across Chattisgarh as the home of two of the most important Hindi-language poets and writers of the twentieth century. Padumlal Punnalal Bakshi and Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh both lived here for long parts of their lives, and Muktibodh wrote much of his major work including the famous long poem Andhere Mein while teaching at the Digvijay College in Rajnandgaon in the 1950s and 1960s. The town's annual Muktibodh Smriti Samaroh continues to celebrate this literary heritage.

Beyond literature, the local economy depends on paddy (the surrounding plain is one of Chattisgarh's biggest rice belts), pulses, the Bajaj Hindusthan sugar mill and the Khairagarh Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, a famous music university just outside the district.
