About Raipur — A Brief History

Raipur is the capital of Chattisgarh, sitting on the dry plateau of central India where the Mahanadi river begins to gather strength. The settlement is over a thousand years old it was the capital of the Kalchuris of Ratanpur in the medieval period, and later passed to the Haihaiyavanshi rajas of Ratanpur, the Bhonsles of Nagpur and finally the British. The town's older landmarks include the Doodhadhari Math, a sixteenth-century Vaishnava monastery still active today, and the Vivekananda Sarovar in the heart of the city, a small lake where the young Swami Vivekananda spent some childhood years with his family.

When Chattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in November 2000, Raipur became the new state capital, and the city has grown rapidly since. The new capital complex at Naya Raipur, planned as one of India's first greenfield smart cities about twenty kilometres south of the older Raipur, holds the new Vidhan Sabha, the secretariat and a planned grid of institutional buildings. The older town remains the commercial heart, with Sadar Bazar, the bullion market and the Mahamaya temple at the centre.

Raipur is the largest steel-trading hub in eastern India, with hundreds of small and medium re-rolling mills, sponge-iron units and steel-trading firms across the city. The local economy also includes rice (Chattisgarh is one of India's largest paddy-producing states), pulses and a growing IT belt at Naya Raipur.
