About Raigarh(mh) — A Brief History

Raigad district covers the central Konkan coast, the strip of land between the Sahyadri ranges and the Arabian Sea south of Mumbai. The district takes its name from the Raigad fort, the hilltop citadel where Shivaji Maharaj was crowned the first Chhatrapati of the Marathas on 6 June 1674. The fort, with its wide plateau, the Maha Darwaja, the Rajbhavan ruins and the samadhi of Shivaji, sits at the spiritual centre of Maharashtra and draws steady streams of visitors through the year.

Beyond Raigad, the district is full of beach towns and sea forts. Alibag, the headquarters town, is just a ferry ride south of Mumbai and is a popular weekend resort, especially after the Mumbai-Alibag RoRo ferry reduced the journey to under an hour. The sea forts at Murud-Janjira, Korlai and Kolaba Janjira being the only fort along the Indian coast that was never captured by an enemy in over three hundred years are spectacular and easily reached. The local economy runs on tourism, fishing, salt and a heavy industrial belt around Pen, Mahad, Khopoli, Nagothane and the JNPT port at Uran.
