About Pune — A Brief History

Pune is one of the most layered cities in western India, sitting at the meeting of the Mula and Mutha rivers, just east of the Sahyadri range. The town shows up as Punawadi in early medieval inscriptions, and it was the home of the Bhonsle family before Shivaji Maharaj turned it into the heart of the Maratha empire in the seventeenth century.
