About Porbandar — A Brief History

Porbandar is a small but historically dense port on the southern coast of Saurashtra, mentioned in medieval texts as Sudamapuri after the friend of Lord Krishna who, according to tradition, came from here to meet his childhood companion in Dwarka. The Sudama temple in the old city continues to draw pilgrims following that route, and the small natural harbour has been used for coastal trade since the early historic period. Old stone warehouses by the customs jetty still hint at the busy dhow trade with East Africa.

The town is most widely known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born on 2 October 1869 in the modest three-storey house in the Pomeshwar lane. The adjoining Kirti Mandir, with its symbolic seventy-nine-foot column representing Gandhi's lifespan, was built in 1950 and now anchors a museum of his life and writings. Porbandar served as a princely state under the Jethwa Rajputs whose Huzoor Palace and Daria Rajmahal still mark the seafront, and the impressive Bharat Mandir houses life-size statues of national figures arranged around its inner courtyard.

Modern Porbandar is the headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard's western fleet, a major fish-landing centre and home to large cement and soda-ash plants that draw on the local limestone.
