About Patiala — A Brief History

Patiala is one of the larger cities of Punjab, set in the south-eastern corner of the state where it meets Haryana. The town was founded in 1763 by Baba Ala Singh, the founding chief of the Patiala Sikh Misl, who built a small mud fort called Patiala Qila patti meaning a tract of land and ala from the founder's name. The mud fort was later expanded by his successors into the magnificent Qila Mubarak complex that still anchors the heart of the old city. The Patiala state was the largest of the Phulkian states under the British and one of the more progressive princely states in north India.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, who ruled from 1900 to 1938, was a flamboyant cricket-playing prince who built the Sheesh Mahal, the Old Moti Bagh palace, and the famous Baradari Garden. He also gave his name to several Punjabi specialities the Patiala peg, the Patiala salwar, the Patiala phulkari (an embroidery style) and the Patiala paranda (the colourful tasselled hair ornament). The Patiala gharana of Hindustani classical music, founded by the masters Aliya and Fattu, also takes its name from this royal patronage.
