About Panipat — A Brief History
Panipat sits in the northern Haryana plain, on the western bank of the Yamuna, on the old grand trunk road between Delhi and Lahore. The town is known across India as the site of three of the most important battles in north Indian history. The first battle of Panipat in 1526 saw Babur defeat Ibrahim Lodi and found the Mughal empire. The second, in 1556, saw Akbar defeat Hemu and re-establish the empire. And the third, in 1761, saw the Marathas suffer a heavy loss to the Afghan Ahmad Shah Abdali a battle whose effects shaped the next century of Indian politics. Memorials at all three sites stand on the outskirts of the town.
Panipat is also one of India's biggest textile centres. After 1947 thousands of Punjabi refugee families settled in Panipat and built up the country's largest handloom and shoddy-yarn cluster. Today the city makes most of India's cotton blankets, durries, bedsheets, towels and curtains, and exports them to over a hundred countries.
