About Pali — A Brief History

Pali sits at the foot of the Aravalli ranges in central Rajasthan, on the road between Jodhpur and Udaipur. The town was a small but old market settlement on the medieval trade route between western Rajasthan and the Gujarat ports, and shows up in Mughal records as Pali Mandi, the Pali wholesale market. Beyond textiles, the district is famous for the Ranakpur Jain Temple, one of the most beautiful marble Jain temples in India, with its 1,444 individually carved pillars, hidden away in the Aravalli hills near Sadri. The fifteenth-century temple draws steady streams of Jain pilgrims and architecture students. The Kumbhalgarh fort, with its 36-kilometre wall, is also partly within Pali district.
