About Osmanabad — A Brief History

Osmanabad officially renamed Dharashiv in 2023 is an old town in the southern part of Marathwada, sitting on the dry Balaghat ranges that mark the border between Maharashtra and Karnataka. The town gets its older name Dharashiv from the Dhar caves and Shiva temple in the old part of the city, and the modern name from the seventh and last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, who held this region until 1948. Tuljapur is one of the four most important Shaktipeethas of Maharashtra, and Tulja Bhavani is the family deity of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Bhavani sword that the goddess is said to have given Shivaji is a famous piece of Maratha legend, and the temple gets close to a million visitors during the Navratri week alone. The Naldurg fort, with its unique water-bridge over the Bori river, is one of the strongest medieval forts in the Deccan and is also worth a visit.

The local economy depends on jowar, soybean, sugarcane and dairy, and the new Solapur–Tuljapur–Osmanabad railway line has put the district on the map. The town is connected to Latur and Solapur by good roads.
