About North West Delhi — A Brief History

North West Delhi sits on the dry Aravalli outwash plain north and west of the original capital. The district covers the planned residential and commercial extensions of Rohini, Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh, Adarsh Nagar and Kingsway Camp, and stretches up to the original village of Narela near the Haryana border. The area was mostly farmland and small Jat villages until the 1970s, when the Delhi Development Authority began acquiring land for the planned new colonies that would house the post-1947 refugee influx and the second wave of the city's growth.

The district has a few historic markers. The Coronation Park at Burari is the site where the Delhi Durbar of 1911 was held the great open-air ceremony where King George V was crowned Emperor of India and the decision to shift the capital from Calcutta to Delhi was announced. The pillars and fragments of the durbar's archway still stand, slowly being restored. The Mughal-era Roshanara Bagh, built by Shah Jahan's daughter, is also in the district and is now a public park. The Buddha Jayanti Park and the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary touch its southern fringe.

Today North West Delhi is one of the most densely populated districts in the country, with planned colonies, the Rohini Court, the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium nearby and Delhi University's outlying campuses.
