About North Delhi — A Brief History

North Delhi covers the old walled city of Shahjahanabad and the colonial-era Civil Lines that stretched north from it. The district holds many of the most historic monuments of the country. The Red Fort, built between 1639 and 1648 by Shah Jahan as the centre of his new capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the place where the Indian flag is hoisted every Independence Day.
