About Nashik — A Brief History

Nashik sits in the upper Godavari valley in northern Maharashtra, where the river breaks out of the Western Ghats and starts flowing east. The city has a strong place in Hindu tradition: the Ramayana says Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent part of their fourteen-year exile in the forests of Panchavati on the northern bank of the Godavari, and the spot where Lakshmana cut off the demoness Surpanakha's nose gave the city its name (nasika meaning nose). Nashik is one of four cities in India that hosts the great Kumbh Mela every twelve years, and the Sinhastha Kumbh on the Ramkund draws millions of pilgrims to the river ghats during the special bathing days. Just outside the city are the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple one of the twelve sacred Shiva shrines and the source of the Godavari and the Shirdi Sai Baba shrine in nearby Ahmednagar district, both within easy day-trip range.

Today Nashik is best known across the country as the wine capital of India, with vineyards across the slopes around Igatpuri, Niphad and Dindori producing more than three-quarters of all Indian wine. The city is also home to the India Security Press that prints government stamps and currency, the HAL aircraft factory that builds Sukhoi-30 fighter jets, and the Mahindra & Mahindra plant.
