About Nandurbar — A Brief History

Nandurbar lies in the north-western corner of Maharashtra, where the state runs into Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The town and the district take their name from the local form Nandanvana, an old word for the orchard groves that once covered the slopes of the Satpura hills here. The area has a long Bhil and Bhilala history, and was carved out of the older Dhule district in 1998 to give the eastern hilly belt its own administrative seat.

The district is most famously remembered for Shirishkumar Mehta, the fifteen-year-old student leader who was shot dead by the British police on 9 September 1942 during a Quit India Movement procession in Nandurbar town. The chowk where he fell, now called Hutatma Chowk, has a memorial that is visited by school groups from across Maharashtra every August. Toranmal, a small hill station in the Satpura range, with its lake and panoramic views, is the other big draw, and the surrounding tribal villages keep alive the Pavri, Korku and Bhilori dance forms.

The local economy depends on chillies, cotton, jowar and tribal forest produce, with the chilli mandi at Shahada being one of the largest in north Maharashtra. Sugarcane is grown in the Tapi-irrigated belt around Shahada and Talode. The Mumbai–Indore railway and NH-6 pass through, and the Sardar Sarovar dam reservoir touches the western edge of the district.
