About Muzaffarpur — A Brief History

Muzaffarpur sits in northern Bihar, on the banks of the Burhi Gandak river, and is one of the larger towns of the state. The settlement was founded in the eighteenth century by Muzaffar Khan, an amil under the Mughal viceroyalty in Bengal, who built a small fort and a market here. The town later passed to the East India Company and the British, who turned it into the headquarters of the older Tirhut district in 1875. The Old District Court, the Sri Babu Sahab Sthal, the Garib Sthan Mandir and the Chaturbhuj Sthan are the older landmarks.

Muzaffarpur is famous across India as the lichi capital of India. The Shahi lichi grown around Muzaffarpur has a Geographical Indication tag and supplies most of India's lichi market every May-June. The orchards around Muzaffarpur, Mushari and Bochaha turn into a sea of lichi crates during the peak season. The China lichi variety from this region is also widely exported.

The town has a strong place in the freedom movement: the famous Muzaffarpur bombing of 1908, when the eighteen-year-old revolutionary Khudiram Bose threw a bomb at a carriage believed to be carrying the British judge Douglas Kingsford, was one of the early flashpoints of the Indian revolutionary movement. Khudiram was hanged in Muzaffarpur jail and remains one of the youngest martyrs of the cause.
