About Ludhiana — A Brief History

Ludhiana is the largest city in Punjab, set on the Sutlej river in the centre of the state. The town was founded in the early sixteenth century by two Lodhi Pathans (Yusuf Khan and Nihang Khan) sent by Sultan Sikandar Lodi to oversee the Sutlej crossing the city's name is a corruption of Lodhiana, the city of the Lodhis. The settlement was held by the Mughals, the Sikhs and finally the British, who took it in 1809 and made it a major frontier cantonment looking out across the Sutlej towards Sikh territory.
