About Lucknow — A Brief History

Lucknow sits on the Gomti river in central UP, and is famous across India as the Nawabi city, the home of refined Awadhi cooking, kathak dance and the chikan embroidery that goes back to the eighteenth century. The town's older history is just as deep it shows up in old Hindu mythology as Lakshmanavati, the city given by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana, and was an important Mughal subah headquarters until the Awadh nawabs broke away from a weakening Mughal empire in 1722 and made Lucknow their capital after 1775.

Under the Nawabs of Awadh, Lucknow grew into one of the most refined cities in north India. Asaf-ud-Daula built the giant Bara Imambara with its giant unsupported hall, the Rumi Darwaza and the Asfi Mosque. Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab, was a poet, dancer and patron of music whose reign saw the city's culture peak just before the British annexed Awadh in 1856 and triggered the great 1857 uprising. The Residency ruins, the Chattar Manzil and the Husainabad Imambara are all part of the standard heritage walk.

Today Lucknow is the capital of UP, with the Vidhan Bhavan, the High Court bench and the secretariat. The city is famous for chikan embroidery (the GI-tagged Lucknawi chikan kurtas are sold across the world), kebabs and the Lucknow Mahotsav each November.
