About Kozhikode — A Brief History

Kozhikode also called Calicut sits on the northern Kerala coast, where the Western Ghats slope down towards the Arabian Sea. The town has been one of the most important trading ports on the western coast of India for over a thousand years. Arab merchants traded pepper, cardamom and ginger here from the early historic period, and the Chinese admiral Zheng He visited Kozhikode several times in the early fifteenth century. The Zamorins of Calicut ruled the town from at least the twelfth century, and made it a remarkably tolerant and cosmopolitan port Hindus, Jews, Muslims and Christians all traded freely under their watch.

Kozhikode is the place where the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed on 20 May 1498, opening the first sea route from Europe to India and changing the course of world history. A small monument at Kappad beach, just outside the city, marks the spot of his landing.
