About Kota — A Brief History

Kota sits on the eastern bank of the Chambal river in southern Rajasthan, surrounded by the rocky Hadoti plateau. The town was a small Hada Rajput jagir under the Bundi state until 1631, when the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan made Madho Singh, the second son of the Bundi ruler, the first independent Maharao of Kota. Madho Singh built the Garh Palace by the river, which still anchors the old city, and his successors expanded the kingdom into one of the larger Hadoti states until British times.
