About Khammam — A Brief History

Khammam sits in eastern Telangana, in the dry country where the state runs into Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The town's older name was Stambhadri, after the Sthambeshwar Hill at the centre of the old town, on top of which the Khilla Khammam (the Khammam Fort) was built by the Kakatiyas in the eleventh century. The fort and the Narsimha Swamy temple inside it still anchor the older quarter. The town later passed to the Recherla Velamas, the Bahmani Sultanate, the Qutb Shahis and finally the Nizam of Hyderabad before joining independent India in 1948.

The biggest pilgrim site in the district is at Bhadrachalam, on the Godavari river at the eastern edge of the district. The Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple at Bhadrachalam is one of the most important Rama temples in southern India, said to mark the spot where Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent part of their forest exile. The temple was built in its present form in the seventeenth century by the saint-tax collector Kancherla Gopanna, known as Bhakta Ramadasu, whose story is still retold across Telugu pop-culture.

Khammam district has a strong tribal Koya and Lambada presence, especially in the eastern hills around Bhadrachalam. The local economy mixes paddy, cotton, tobacco, the giant NTPC Telangana super thermal power station near Manuguru, and granite quarrying.
