About Karnal — A Brief History

Karnal sits in the north-eastern part of Haryana, on the Yamuna's western bank, on the old highway between Delhi and Lahore. Tradition links the town to Karna, the great warrior of the Mahabharata, who is said to have founded the original settlement here, and the Karna talab and Karna temple at the centre of the city still mark that connection. The town later passed through the hands of the Mughals, the Marathas and the British, and the third battle of Panipat was fought just south of Karnal in 1761.

The local economy mixes basmati rice (the famous Pusa basmati was bred here), wheat, sugarcane and dairy with a growing food-processing belt and the Liberty Footwear group's manufacturing units. The town sits on NH-1 and the Delhi–Ambala–Amritsar railway, with the Karnal–Sonipat railway connecting it to the rest of the NCR.
