About Kanpur Nagar — A Brief History

Kanpur Nagar the urban part of greater Kanpur sits on the south-western bank of the Ganga in central UP, and was for many years called Cawnpore by the British. The settlement is much older than its colonial name, having been part of the Awadh nawabi territory in the eighteenth century, but it really took shape after the British set up a major cantonment here in 1801 and turned Kanpur into the largest leather-tanning, cotton-textile and gunpowder centre in north India. The Kanpur of the 1857 uprising, where the British garrison fell to Nana Sahib's forces and the Bibighar tragedy played out, is part of every Indian history book.

The post-1947 city kept its industrial weight. Generations of workers ran the great cotton-and-jute mills along the Mall Road, and the J.K. Group of factories. The Kanpur leather cluster is by far the largest in India, supplying military boots, finished leather and saddles to the world.
