About Kanpur Dehat — A Brief History

Kanpur Dehat sits just west of the Kanpur city limits, a mostly rural district of cane-fields, leather-tanneries and small market towns that the state government carved out of the larger Kanpur district in 1981 to give the rural belt its own administrative seat. The headquarters town, Mati (officially called Akbarpur, in Maitha tehsil), is one of the smaller district capitals in UP, but the surrounding villages are tied closely into the much bigger Kanpur metropolitan economy.

The district has many small but important pilgrimage sites. Bhognipur is famous for the Goddess Bhog Pani temple and the annual Kartik Purnima fair on the Pandu river. The Bhitargaon temple, an early Gupta brick temple from the fifth century CE and one of the oldest of its kind in India, sits inside this district and is now an ASI-protected site that scholars from across India come to study.

The local economy depends on sugarcane (the Pukhrayan and Akbarpur belt has cooperative sugar mills), wheat, dairy and small leather-tanning units that feed the bigger Kanpur leather cluster. The Delhi-Kanpur railway and NH-2 keep the district connected, and the new Bundelkhand Expressway runs along the southern edge.
