About Kaithal — A Brief History

Kaithal is an old town in northern Haryana, sitting just south of where the Markanda river crosses into the state from Himachal. The settlement is mentioned in the Mahabharata under the name Kapisthal, the abode of monkeys, and tradition links it to Hanuman whose mother Anjani is said to have lived in this area. The Anjani-mata temple in the heart of the town and the daily aarti there are at the centre of Kaithal's older religious life.

Kaithal became important under the Bhattis and later under the Sikh sardars in the eighteenth century, before passing to the British in 1843. The town has many small medieval monuments the Phowwara Chowk, the Sirsa Gate, the Bidkyar Lake (one of Haryana's largest natural reservoirs and now a notified bird sanctuary) and the dargah of Shaikh Shahabuddin all still stand. Pundri, in the same district, is closely linked with the Pandavas and has the famous Sindhwan and Pinhgora temples.

The local economy depends on wheat, rice (the basmati belt around Pundri and Kaithal is one of the best in north India), sugarcane and a string of cooperative sugar mills. The Bhakra canal system runs straight through, and the new Trans-Haryana Expressway and the Delhi-Amritsar high-speed rail line have improved connections.
