About Jodhpur — A Brief History

Jodhpur is the second-largest city of Rajasthan and the historic capital of the great Marwar kingdom that ruled western Rajasthan for nearly five hundred years. The city was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rathore prince who shifted his court from the older Mandore palace eight kilometres north. Rao Jodha laid out the city around the steep rocky outcrop of the Bhakurcheeria, where his son and grandson would later build the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort that still towers over the old town.

Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest and best-preserved hill forts in India, with seven gates, the Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and Moti Mahal palace courts, and a fine collection of royal palanquins, miniature paintings and weapons. Below the fort, the old walled city of Jodhpur is still painted in shades of blue a tradition started by Brahmin households and slowly adopted across the city earning Jodhpur its nickname of the Blue City. The Jaswant Thada, a marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, the giant clock-tower of Sardar Market, and the Umaid Bhawan Palace round out the heritage circuit.
