About Jhujhunu — A Brief History

Jhunjhunu sits at the heart of the Shekhawati region of north-eastern Rajasthan, in the dry plain that runs up towards Haryana and Punjab. The town was founded by the Kayamkhani Nawabs in the early fifteenth century and named after the Kayamkhani chief Jujhar Singh, who held the area until the Shekhawat Rajputs took it in the eighteenth century. The town's older quarter still has the Mertaniji ki Baori step-well, the Khetri Mahal palace and the Kayamkhani-era mosque as anchors.

Jhunjhunu is widely known as the open-air gallery of Shekhawati frescoes. From the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, the Marwari merchants who controlled the trade between Calcutta, Bombay and the Silk Road built hundreds of huge painted havelis across the Shekhawati towns of Jhunjhunu, Mandawa, Nawalgarh and Bissau. Their walls were decorated with frescoes of Hindu gods, British viceroys, vintage cars, the Wright brothers' aircraft and other contemporary marvels. Many of these havelis are now slowly being restored as heritage hotels and museums.

The district is also famous as one of the highest army-recruitment regions in India the Shekhawat villages around Jhunjhunu, Mandawa and Khetri have been sending soldiers to the Indian army (and earlier to the British army) for over a hundred years, and the Shaheed Smarak in Jhunjhunu town honours their memory. The local economy depends on Marwari trade, copper mining at Khetri (one of India's largest copper deposits), pearl-millet (bajra) farming and a growing tourism circuit.
