About Jhansi — A Brief History

Jhansi sits in the Bundelkhand region of southern UP, on the dry plateau where the state runs into Madhya Pradesh. The town shows up in early Bundela records under the name Balwantnagar, and the Bundela king Bir Singh Deo built the great hilltop Jhansi Fort here in 1613 to control the Bundelkhand trade routes. After his death the town passed through Mughal, Maratha and finally British hands, but the name everyone associates with Jhansi today is Rani Lakshmibai, the warrior queen who led one of the strongest local revolts against the British in 1857-58.

The story of Rani Jhansi has become part of every Indian schoolbook. She fought from Jhansi Fort, escaped on horseback with her young son strapped to her back when the British finally took the city, and died in battle near Gwalior in June 1858. Her statue at the centre of the city, the fort she defended, the Rani Mahal palace and the Maharani Lakshmibai Memorial Museum draw steady streams of visitors through the year.

Beyond Rani Jhansi, the district is also the closest railhead to the Khajuraho temples and the Orchha World Heritage site, both an hour's drive away. The local economy depends on pulses, wheat, defence manufacturing (the new Bundelkhand Industrial Corridor passes through), and a growing solar-power belt.
