About Jalgaon — A Brief History

Jalgaon is the largest town of Khandesh, sitting in the cotton-and-banana plain that runs between the Tapi and Girna rivers. The settlement has been a market and trading post since at least the time of the Faruqi sultans, who ruled Khandesh from nearby Burhanpur, and it later passed to the Mughals, the Marathas and the British. The town's flat grid plan, broad bazaars and the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the centre all reflect the slow growth of a colonial-era trading headquarters into a busy modern city.

Jalgaon today is widely called the banana capital of India, because the district produces close to a quarter of the country's bananas, with the famous 'Jalgaon Kela' going out as far as Iran and the Middle East. The town is also the home base of Jain Irrigation Systems, one of the world's largest micro-irrigation companies, and of the Rajmal Lakhichand and Bhagwati gold-trading houses, after which the city is sometimes called the gold city of India. The Patnadevi temple, the dargah of Pir Shah Bilal and the Mehrun lake round out the local cultural map.

The local economy is built on bananas, cotton, oilseeds, gold-jewellery wholesale and a growing food-processing cluster. The Mumbai–Howrah trunk railway and NH-6 keep Jalgaon well linked, and Bhusawal junction in the same district is one of the largest railway junctions on this route.
