About Jaipur — A Brief History

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan, a planned city that the Kachhwaha king Sawai Jai Singh II founded in 1727 when he shifted his court from the older hilltop fort at Amer down to a flat plain a few kilometres south. Sawai Jai Singh was a remarkable astronomer-king, and he laid out his new capital on a strict grid plan based on Vastu Shastra and ancient Indian town-planning manuals a layout still preserved almost untouched in the walled old city. In 1876, when the Prince of Wales visited, the entire walled city was painted pink to welcome him, and the colour stuck. Jaipur has been the Pink City ever since.

The walled city, today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds the famous Hawa Mahal with its 953 latticework windows, the City Palace with its Mubarak Mahal and Chandra Mahal, the Jantar Mantar masonry observatory (also a UNESCO site), and the busy market streets of Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar and Tripolia Bazaar. Just outside the walled city sit the Amer Fort, the Nahargarh and Jaigarh forts above it (Jaigarh houses the world's largest cannon on wheels), and the Royal Cenotaphs at Gaitor.

Jaipur is the heart of Rajasthan's tourism, jewellery and textile economy.
