About Jabalpur — A Brief History

Jabalpur lies in the Mahakaushal region of central Madhya Pradesh, set on the Narmada river just upstream of the gorge of marble cliffs at Bhedaghat. The town's name is traced to the sage Jabali, and it has been an important centre at least since the time of the Kalachuri kings of Tripuri in the eighth to twelfth centuries CE, whose ruined capital still lies a short distance west of the modern city. The Chausath Yogini temple at Bhedaghat, with its circular shrine of sixty-four goddesses, is one of the more striking Kalachuri-era survivors anywhere in India.

After the Kalachuris came the Gond kings of Garha-Mandla, including the celebrated queen Rani Durgavati who fell in battle against the Mughal general Asaf Khan in 1564 and is commemorated by a memorial and museum in the city. The British made Jabalpur the headquarters of the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, leaving behind the old cantonment, the Madan Mahal fort on its Tomar-era hill and a long list of mission schools and colleges that still anchor the city's education profile.

Modern Jabalpur hosts three Indian Army cantonments, an Ordnance Factory complex, a High Court bench and a clutch of central institutes including IIITDM and the State Forest Research Institute. The marble quarries of Bhedaghat and the Dhuandhar falls draw weekend visitors, while industries process limestone and produce pulses and fabricated steel.
