About Idukki — A Brief History

Idukki is a hilly district sitting in the heart of the Western Ghats, one of the most beautiful and least-developed parts of southern India. The district takes its name from the giant Idukki Arch Dam at 168 metres one of the highest arch dams in the world built across the Periyar river between two tall granite hills. The dam, completed in 1974, holds the Idukki reservoir which generates a large share of southern India's hydroelectric power.

The district is sometimes called the spice garden of India because of the cardamom, pepper, ginger and cocoa plantations that cover most of its hill slopes. The Cardamom Hills around Munnar, the most famous hill station in the district, run between elevations of 1,500 and 2,500 metres and produce some of the world's best small green cardamom. Munnar itself, with its endless rolling tea estates, the colonial-era club at the High Range and the Anamudi peak (at 2,695 metres the tallest in southern India) just outside, draws over a million visitors a year. The Eravikulam National Park beside Anamudi is the home of the Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat species found only in these hills.

Beyond tea and cardamom, the district has the Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekkady, the Painavu administrative town and a strong Christian-and-tribal heritage. The local economy depends on plantations, hydroelectricity and tourism.
