About Howrah — A Brief History

Howrah sits on the western bank of the Hooghly river, directly across from Kolkata, and is one of the oldest urban settlements in eastern India. The town shows up in Portuguese trading records of the early sixteenth century as Howrah, and the area was part of the Mughal subah of Bengal before the British took it in 1760 and made it the manufacturing twin of Calcutta. The famous Howrah Bridge, built between 1936 and 1942, links Howrah to Kolkata and is one of the most photographed bridges in India every image of the rising Kolkata skyline includes its silver-grey trusses.

Howrah is best known across India as the railway and engineering city. Howrah Station, with its 23 platforms, is the largest railway station in the country, and the headquarters of the Eastern Railway and the South Eastern Railway are both based here. Howrah was also one of the earliest industrial cities in colonial India, and its iron-and-steel foundries, jute mills and locomotive workshops gave it the nickname Sheffield of the East. Many of those mills are now closed, but a strong engineering and machine-tool cluster still operates around Belur, Liluah and Bally.

Beyond industry, Howrah has the famous Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1898, and one of the most visited spiritual centres in eastern India. The Indian Botanic Garden at Shibpur, with its 250-year-old Great Banyan Tree, is the second-oldest botanical garden in India.
